Because of the pang-ao’s rarity, it took years of treasure hunts, meeting with actual mountain people to dealers and collectors to find these elusive beads. Pang-ao’s are rare glass beads from the ehtnic people in Nothern Luzon that house gold foil inside them, and are deeply valued. Centuries past, it was told and retold that one piece of this glass bead was traded for one whole carabao. Older pieces generally have a lighter yellow tone, but their rarity finds natives wearing newer pieces that differ in color from the older pang-ao. The beads in this particular necklace carry a deeper gold hue. They are interspersed with heirloom blue beads that provide an air of elegance and royalty to this rich Filipino piece.
