By the turn of the 20th century, diamonds were in fashion. Local artisans or “plateros” would call small old cut stones as single cut stones, like the .01 to .15 pointer-sized diamonds called “titos.” The use of the term “old cut diamonds” would refer to the same single cut diamond, but big ones. To wit, single cut and old cut diamonds have the same cut but are used differently based on the size of the diamond.
Prime old cut diamonds were handcrafted. A hand-cut stone will never match the precision of a machine-cut stone, but that is part of its unique charm. Old cut diamonds represent a time in our history, and are unfairly compared to machine-cut stones because they are graded against modern standards. Machine cut diamonds may be ordered according to your specification. But old cut diamonds are dwindling in supply, so their popularity will now mean a battle of history versus modernity.
