The Cross of this Necklace is formed from a thin silver sheet. On top of this metal sheet are fresh water pearls that accent the cross. It hangs on a chain called kerel. A kerel chain is made of very thin and fine wires that are interwoven to form a long, pliable and bendable chain. Artisans of today cannot replicate the functionality of this chain as the wire tends to be stiff and unbending. This mastery in showcasing both details and function of the Filipino artisan’s jewelry making techniques during the Spanish colonial period is worthy of praise. The Cross and Kerel Chain is a neckpiece used by most the common Filipino then, a testament of the Filipinos’ strong acquired faith from the Spaniards.
